Pump ring

The pump ring in a power steering pump (also called a **wear ring**, **pressure ring**, or **side plate**) is a critical component that ensures efficient

hydraulic pressure generation and minimizes internal leakage.

1. Function of the Pump Ring in Power Steering Pumps

- Sealing & Pressure Control

  - Maintains tight clearance between the **rotor (vane or gear)** and **housing** to prevent oil leakage. 

  - Ensures proper **pressure buildup** for smooth steering assistance. 

- Wear Protection

  - Acts as a sacrificial component to protect the pump housing from abrasion. 

- Oil Flow Management

  - Helps direct hydraulic fluid efficiently between **low-pressure (suction)** and **high-pressure (discharge)** zones.  

Common Pump Types   

Vane Pump Wear Ring, Used in **vane-type** power steering pumps; ensures smooth vane movement. Most passenger vehicles (Toyota, Ford, GM)

Gear Pump Side Plate, Found in **gear-type** pumps; reduces friction between gears and housing. Older/economic vehicles, trucks

Pressure Ring A specialized ring that maintains hydraulic pressure in high-performance pumps. Performance/Luxury vehicles

- Carbon Composite** (Lightweight, reduces friction) 

- Hardened Steel** (Durable, used in heavy-duty applications)
